...other side of the door is a photo of J. Edgar Hoover. Staring at it, Mulder and Scully just shrug, but that's unfair to the FBI's snoop extraordinaire, the vicar of voyeurs, the patron saint of the TV show's belief that under every bed, in every closet or out in a pumpkin patch is something very scary that could bring America to its knees. And even if it doesn't, it's worth tracking down, keeping in a locked drawer. Knowledge is power, and belief in the dark side spurs you to gain that knowledge...

Displeasing the traditionalists might have had important repercussions in the past, but these days the museum can largely shrug them off. That's because, under Loyrette and his deputy Selles, the Louvre is becoming ever less dependent on France's establishment. The French state, which wholly funded the museum for much of its history, still subsidizes it generously, doling out about $180 million in 2008. But that's only about half the total budget. Mike Myers' signature shtick is the grin and shrug of a little boy who's just said something naughty or possibly made fart bubbles in the bathtub, and who relies on charm to get away with it. He used it on Saturday Night Live as young Simon, of course, and as basement TV host Wayne Campbell, and once or twice as Linda Richman. Austin Powers occasionally flashed that someone-stop-me grin through his misshapen English teeth. (Dieter the German performance artist and Shrek, not so much.) The Cat in the Hat was nothing but irritating-ingratiating impishness...

...flight delays from Baghdad International Airport, which goes into lockdown when VIPs land or takeoff. Since no dust storms were grounding flights, anyone traveling could have assumed some American bigwig was heading in. But when local TV reported the visitor was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, there was a collective shrug of the kind you might expect from Republicans catching a glimpse of her somewhere in McCain country...
