...permafrost is on dry land either. The East Siberian Arctic Shelf, a vast expanse of shallow seafloor off Russia's northeast coast, was once wetland as well. It was submerged as melting glaciers drove sea level up at the end of the last ice age, but it still contains methane-rich permafrost, which Shakhova believes may now be becoming unstable. The numbers are not alarmingly large, she agrees, but what is worrisome is that no leakage was expected here. (See TIME's special report on the environment...

...Swift’s “Love Story” is arguably a great song, not just for country fans or tweens, but for the earth. Yet, though Swift may be the songbird of our generation, she is a terrible actress.  Cast as a ditsy and shallow high school senior, a job that shouldn’t be too much of a stretch for Swift, the squinty-eyed blonde delivers forced line-readings and is generally far too over the top.   Her boyfriend is played by real life boyfriend Taylor Lautner, who surprisingly...

Aciman’s shower of allusions is too perfunctory to do justice to the ideas and places he is evoking. The nod to a different cultural context is shallow, but additionally becomes disturbing when Aciman uses metaphors reminiscent of the pain and trauma caused by World War II to describe the main character’s somewhat unconvincing anguish at Clara’s rejection. ...population is more than 90% Chinese, garbs itself with a sleek cosmopolitanism, casual bigotry still shapes the daily experience of many of its nonwhite, non-Chinese residents. Local Chinese, Wong says, have a lack of understanding of minorities in their city, especially South Asians and Africans, and cling to shallow and negative stereotypes. (This even though many South Asians speak fluent Cantonese and have ties to the city that predate the Chinese majority.) It's an apathy that has led to hiring practices in the city that discriminate against minorities as well as a public school system that has neglected...

...first section tells the story of four European critics bound together by a fascination with the elusive German novelist Benno von Archimboldi. Shallow globetrotters with a surplus of luxury time, they combine and couple in various permutations of the three male critics and their single female colleague, endure bizarre and horrifying dreams, and plunge stoically into the breach between art and madness. Their search for a trace of the living author leads them to Santa Teresa, where a brush with the Spanish professor Oscar Amalfitano gives way to that character’s own section. Of all the protagonists throughout...
