...appropriate thing to do strategically but because it was something the country could do when something had to be done," military scholar Richard Betts wrote in Foreign Affairs in 2007. Neither Presidents nor lawmakers want to be branded unpatriotic by trying to cut defense spending, a non sequitur if there ever was one. Many lawmakers cloak their advocacy for hometown weapons production in such red, white and blue bunting...

Sadly, the album contains a few regrettable missteps. “Holiday” features an appalling non sequitur of a bridge, out of nowhere introducing the story of a girl protesting against the Iraq War by becoming a vegetarian into a song that seemed to be about vacations. There is no real point to the political sidestep, and it sits very awkwardly with the song and the album as a whole. On “California English” the group for some reason chooses to auto-tune Koenig’s voice, with terrible results. Closer...

Conan, however, was far too polite to attack public figures. His absurd and non sequitur humor worked exceedingly well at 12:35 p.m., but by refusing to change his style for 11:35 p.m., he implicitly rejected the late-night tradition. His lively lectures, delivered in deliriously Italian-cadenced, non sequitur - studded English, cover such topics as how to identify a fruit's sugar content and how to do the surprisingly complicated math of balancing sugar (an antifreeze) and fat (the opposite): "You increase the fat content, but it freezes. So you need to compensate with sugar. You say, 'Maestro, not possible!' Yes, it is possible! I show...

...Family Guy is that it seems to want to say everything. It's The Simpsons on Red Bull, with a dysfunctional family - the Griffins of Quahog, R.I. - but twice the outrageousness and thrice the pace. Its signature move is to cut away from a story line for a non sequitur gag (a pop-culture parody, a celebrity spoof, a Star Wars reference). The Simpsons is a satire, but it's rooted in its family. Family Guy is less a half-hour narrative about characters than a delivery system for unconnected jokes the writers can't bear to part with...
