...designer duds. She buys by the armful, goes home to her computer and within a couple of days has set up her own fashion show--on eBay, in full view of anyone with a modem and a yen to bid on the clothes she puts up for auction. Bids race through cyberspace, winners are declared, and Wicker mails the goods to the lucky buyers--and cashes their money orders and cashier's checks, sometimes for a tidy profit and always with the thrill of a successful sale. Sometimes it flies, sometimes it crawls, but it always passes inexorably. We mark it, save it, waste it, bide it, race against it. We measure it incessantly, with a passion for precision that borders on the obsessive. "This answers Bradley's big criticism of Gore, that he's not bold enough," says TIME Washington correspondent John F. Dickerson. Bradley's proposal, which covers a wide range of services, including child and health care...
...Census Bureau decided to allow individuals to check as many categories for race as they identify with on the 2000 Census. Hopefully, Harvard and many other societal entities chained to tradition will come to understand that due to the growing rate of interracial marriages, a substantial number of people can no longer only classify themselves as a member of a single ethnic group. This key demographic change must be recognized and the proper measures taken to incorporate the swelling ranks of multiracial individuals...
