...Juniors in Architecture, M. I. T. (so says the Spectrum) come to Cambridge to view the architectural splendors which beautify our Yard. They noticed, in University, "the lower flights of stairs, the steps of the second run of which are built into the wall about two feet, and project therefrom about five, without any support at the outer end." The Spectrum doubtless makes this remark in all kindness, but we confess to a self-reproachful twinge. Have we not mounted that "run" thousands of times, and never thought about their projection, but only that each step was bringing...
This idea at first doubtless strikes some with horror, who say to themselves: "Miserable plan! to think of a man's not being allowed to choose his own boarding-place!" True, several objections to this plan may be seen; but who ever heard of a project to which objections could not be raised? Let us see how much can be said in its favor. It is unnecessary to state that I do not refer to such a Commons as at present disgraces us, - for it would be hardly less than brutal to compel any one to attend a place...
Secondly, the writer urges as favorable to the project "the generous rivalry, communion, and fellowship" which would ensue therefrom. He regards the "emulation and enthusiasm provoked and produced" by the regatta as one of its best features, and asserts that "all this would be realized on a more elevated scale" in the proposed contest...
