As long as the Catalogue says, "None but those who need assistance are expected to apply," it will be hard to convince the average intelligence that money given in so-called scholarships is not a charity. The arguments of "T." on this point are somewhat plausible, but they seem to us unsound. We cannot see how the assistance given by the founders of scholarships to the holders of them can be called "a mutual helping toward a common end" any more than any other form of charity...
Other instructors here use the curve system of marking to accomplish the same end, and declare that it is "infallible," but I make it a point never to use any system, - a principle that prevents my having to work outside of the recitations...
