...closing thoughts. One, there's a lot of functionality built into Vista - look at the photo editor, which is integrated with the operating system and which works like a stripped-down version of the already-stripped-down Photoshop Elements. Isn't that the kind of anti-competitive integration that got Microsoft into anti-trust court last time around? (Not that they ever left: they're facing hundred-million Euro fines in Europe as we speak...
...annoying thing about the SpaceNavigator is that you can't use it for much else. It comes with a Windows-based photo viewer, so you can more easily scrutinize high-megapixel shots. But as I said it's just a viewer, not an editor, and Photoshop and other leading photo software doesn't support SpaceNavigator at this point. You can't even use it as a mouse replacement, and it isn't yet compatible with Macs, though I assume that will be remedied in the near future. Complaints aside, it's a very well made piece of hardware...
...also an editor. Once, I was shooting at a high-school graduation, and I realized halfway through that a setting was making my pictures too dim. When I got home, I had to adjust them in Photoshop Elements. If I make the same blunder on the D40, I could lighten up the shots right on the camera, which saves the edited image as a separate file, in case you don't like the fix. This is helpful not just when you're clumsy, as I was, but when you say, shoot in low light and want to edit...
...said digital photography may contribute to a decreasing interest in traditional photography, and the pervasiveness of software like Adobe Photoshop may make trips to darkrooms more obsolete...
...Photoshop Elements software I tested was a beta, and I noticed some sluggishness, especially when I loaded up the main library of 10,335 shots. I wish I could have done more with the Map and Calendar views, and tagging everything was a bit of a drag, although, one would hope, a one-time drag. Very soon cameras will have built-in GPS trackers and other ways to create tags instantly. When that day comes, Photoshop Elements will automatically sort ?em out. At least, that?s my hope...
