Hyman said in an interview that one way the DSM currently handles this complexity is to have what he described as a "wastebasket" diagnosis - called "not otherwise specified" (NOS) - that captures just about anything that doesn't easily fit the categorical model. One major problem with the NOS diagnosis: pretty much anyone can qualify for a diagnosis that, by definition, is not specified.
