...Friends" tells of a young clerk with an "almost Apollic hand," "a thin nose," a "wide nare," and "unplumbed eyes," who reluctantly wins the friendship of a fellow clerk--and proves to be a girl (as the clever reader has discovered some months in advance of the hero). The story lacks novelty, probability and power. "The Process" appears to be just such a tale as no young man should try to tell, a tale outside the author's experience and beyond the present reach of his imagination. BELOW is a specimen of orthography and geography at a recent examination for admission to Bowdoin College. The written papers on Geography contained the following: "Nare ganset," "Pernobscot," "Florady," "Mississuri," "Iterly." The Catskill Mountains were credited by one writer to Vermont; by another to Pennsylvania. The Alps to Asia, by a third. Berlin was set down as the capital of Spain; Geneva was transferred to Italy. The Rhine was said to flow into the Atlantic, the Danube into the Baltic. An example comes to our mind of a candidate for admission to Harvard College giving the width of the Amazon...
