...final work was an electrifying setting of Virgil Thomson's "Seven Choruses from the Medea of Euripides" choreographed by Amy Greenfield, who also danced the title role with just the right mixture of passion and inhuman wildness. As Jason, Gus Solomon combined a rigid discipline with a strongly rhythmical movement, producing an effective and intense characterization. The other dancers and the chorus were caught up by the highly charged emotion and supported the principals well. The choreography had about it a sureness and feeling for line that emphaized the fact that this was dance, and not simply a danced story...
Bidding for political power, the Lower Congo's Abako Party announced it would boycott the December vote rather than submit to the "slowness" of Brussels' timetable. Hoping to gain control of the rival Congolese National Movement, an ambitious politician named Patrice Lumumba increased the ante. Fiery Lumumba, a 33-year-old former postal clerk and convicted embezzler, cried, "Total independence NOW NOW NOW," at a Stanleyville meeting of his followers, many of them armed with spears and painted as if for battle. Police rushed in to arrest Lumumba, and his supporters fought back, touching off two days...
Billy Smith's leg, held by metal pins and skin grafts from his abdomen, has slowly knitted together during the past four months. He still has no feeling or movement in the limb. Not for another few months will the surgeons undertake thg. tricky task of reopening the leg to sew together the finger-thick sheath of the sciatic (spinal) nerve. They are going on surgeons' experience that nerves mend better when they are connected several months after an accident, figure that Smith will start walking again-although with a severe limp-within a year...

Former president Harold Taylor, who retired last year, discussed administrative matters freely with the students, encouraging the feeling that the students work hand in hand with, rather than under the aegis of, the administration. The feeling of intellectual community appears to be a movement away from individualism. One suspects that individualism came first to Sarah Lawrence, and that the community spirit represents an attempt at moderation...
