...could not be sweeter in the leading role, and everyone around her is genial enough, the movie does not quite deserve its promotional association with such predecessors as Gregory's Girl and Local Hero. For it lacks the wayward exuberance and quirkiness of those small delights. No inexplicable motorcyclist or man in a penguin suit is permitted to wander through Director Duffell's tidy frames. Nor are any brief, enlivening emotional squalls that might stir up those placid waters. The result is rather like a nice day at the beach: nothing wrong with it, but nothing much...

...West. His motorcycle offers him no protection from the bandits' six-shooters, and Swann himself carries no modern firearms. Consequently, none of the other characters in the movie seems too impressed by him. Perhaps the weakness of the plot lies in the fact that it's a motorcyclist--rather than the commander of a tank or the pilot of an F-14--who is sent back in time. In the end of the movie a helicopter--sent by the research company to find Swann--is very nearly shot down by a six-shooter, and we have to wonder what good...

...elements. The story is of the same cali ber: Michael, an English lad (Maxwell Caulfield), falls in love with Stephanie (Michelle Pfeiffer), leader of the T-Birds' hangers-on, the Pink Ladies. Her heart, however, does wheelies for him only when he dresses up as a mysteriously masked motorcyclist, a sort of Lone Ranger on a hawg. He does not reveal his true identity to her until the concluding production number, although the audience is in on the secret all along.
