Efforts by the U.S. and France to find Baby Doc a new home continued to be unavailing. The latest country to reject a feeler: tiny Monaco. When the west African nation of Gabon was sounded out, the response from President Omar Bongo was curt: "We are not a garbage can." Baby Doc would love to stay in France, but the French summarily reject the idea. Stung by his rough treatment, Duvalier declared, "If I had known the only country I feel close to wouldn't welcome me, I would never have given up power...

...gets to fire off only one big shot at the big shots every year, and to make sure that attention is paid, Mr. Blackwell really piles on the bile. This year the best he could do was top his Worst Dressed List with Princess Stephanie of Monaco. Referring to her chopped hair and flair for less than feminine attire, Blackwell, whose little-used first name is Richard, bitingly declared, "Her royal unisex wardrobe entitles her to use either bathroom." Then the clawing got cloying. No. 2 on the list was Joan Collins ("One more pushup and she'll have three...

Captain Brent Wilkinson leads this group, with returnees Scott Collins and Larry Bean providing strong support...

These things change, of course. Not a month ago, Karen Hilton, a director of New York's Wilhelmina model agency, was talking about her newest and ritziest signing. Princess Stephanie of Monaco, she said, "has the look that is in, a little boyish but sexy." Now, she insists, "people are just looking for something to say about her because she's a princess. She never struck me as boyish." It appears that the princess, like a new imported automobile, is undergoing some last-minute modification for domestic consumption...

...Monaco Palace Press Officer Nadia Lacoste patiently batted the stories back. "The truth is always much simpler," she said. "The Prince has never said what he thought of her modeling, and he won't make any comment now. The princess is still recuperating (from a bout of intestinal flu). She's been modeling since February, and she was just overtired." Hilton says that Stephanie is "on a little vacation with her father, and she's supposed to return to Paris in a week. Then I'll talk to her about rescheduling...
