...Brash was the tone for several actors who died last year. Van Johnson, 92, was the boy-next-door type, wooing such luscious ingenues as Elizabeth Taylor, Esther Williams, June Allyson and Janet Leigh. But he laced his altar-boy grin with a terrier's raspy impatience; he was the Chris Matthews of 1940s MGM. A trash-talking, proto-rapping musical-comedy star of a later era, Rudy Ray Moore, 81, created the street-smut sasser Dolemite as part of his stand-up act, then used the character as the hero of a legendarily transgressive 1975 blaxploitation epic. ...haired woman in fur on his arm. They stop occasionally to examine one of the many Persian carpets arrayed on a wall the length of a tennis court. Against the black cloth of the exhibition hall's walls, the brightly colored handmade silk carpets - in vibrant blues and greens, luscious reds and purples - almost leap off the backdrop...

They're around mostly to provide alibis and victims, and for spaces between the dialogues of the stars...

...dead-on observations of upper-class life by a working-class narrator--a narrator, one imagines, not unlike Sittenfeld herself, who was jolted from Cincinnati to the rarefied precincts of the Groton School in Massachusetts. There is a similar class consciousness in American Wife, especially in the luscious passages in which Alice describes her first encounters with the Blackwell family at its summer estate, Halcyon, on Lake Michigan. The Blackwells are overwhelming, especially the materfamilias, known as Maj (short for "Her Majesty"). They are classic inbred Wasps, fetishizers of the threadbare--there is only one bathroom, with iffy plumbing...
