Reclining Tiger, and from his sketches of a spotted leopard and a listless, striped tiger, framed he fearful symmetry of a wide-eyed beast of prey, Tigre Royale. Where in pencil, the tiger's feet were merely misshaped ovals, in lithograph form, the cat's paws took on the stream-lined and savage spikes of track shoes. His feline groin is striped like a surreal clouded sky and reiterates the contours of the landscape...

MOST Americans know the first Americans only by cliché. There is the 19th century image, caught in bronze and in lithograph, of the defeated warrior, head drooping forward so that his feathers nearly mingle with his pony's mane. The bow of his shoulders and the slump of his body evoke his loss of pride, of green and fertile lands, of earth's most favored continent. Then there is a recent image, often seen through air-conditioned automobile windows. Grinning shyly, the fat squaw hawks her woven baskets along the reservation highway, the dusty landscape littered with rusting cars, crumbling...
...Kind Words. The most impressive battery of expert arguments brought together since the debate began appeared in modest lithograph form. It was a 340-page report by 16 scientists and other experts organized last February by Senator Edward Kennedy, a leader of the ABM critics. Jointly edited by M.I.T. Provost Jerome Wiesner and Harvard Law Professor Abram Chayes, the study included a paper by a Nobel laureate, Physicist Hans Bethe, as well as contributions by Arthur Goldberg, Theodore Sorensen, Bill Moyers and other veterans of service in high places. Nowhere perhaps is this more vividly seen than in his 1896 version of The Sick Child (see color pages), a marvelously sensitive evocation of his elder sister Sophie, who died of tuberculosis when Munch was 14. In fact, the lithograph of The Sick Child is essentially a detail from a larger oil that Munch had painted some ten years before. The painting showed the child upright against a pillow, with her aunt, head bowed, next to her, but the lithograph zeroes in on "the trembling lips, the transparent skin, the tired eyes" that had inspired him in the first place...
