...thing all sides agree on is that the valley was in flux. The old libertarian pioneer ethos was giving way to a rising Christian conservatism. By shrewdly invoking issues that mattered to the ascendant majority, Palin won the mayor's race. But while she may have been a new face, says Naegele, she was no maverick - not yet. "The state party gave her the mechanism to get into that office," says Naegele. "As soon as she was confident enough to brush them off, she did. But she wasn't an outsider to start with. She very much had to kowtow...

...just a few tossed-away lines in a stump speech. That shouldn't be too difficult. An argument can be made that McCain is trigger-happy overseas and out of touch at home. In fact, Matt Welch made a convincing trigger-happy argument against McCain in Reason magazine - a libertarian publication - cataloging all the times over the past 20 years that McCain has overreacted to international crises, down to his recent ridiculous statement that the situation in Georgia was "the first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War." ...Freedom Brigade "The (Not So) Lunatic Fringe" by Nathan Thornburgh was a refreshingly honest and straightforward report on Libertarians [July 21]. I can take issue with only two points: First, that the Libertarian Party somehow sold some of its soul by selecting Congressman Bob Barr as its presidential candidate. I was at the Denver convention and don't agree that we sold our soul in selecting Barr. Second, the statement that we Libertarians "poach" from Republicans. That depends on what part of the country you're referring to. As a Libertarian in Maryland, I can tell you that most Libertarians...

Thank you, Nathan Thornburgh, for drawing attention to a group of Americans who will play an important role in the presidential election, "The (Not So) Lunatic Fringe" [July 21]. Not all of them are libertarians, however, and many have little in common with rural gun lovers. As you point out, the central goal of libertarianism is freedom. There is a group of Americans who support free markets and social freedom but do not necessarily consider themselves libertarian. We are educated urban dwellers--Bobos even. As a member of this group, I find neither Obama nor McCain appealing. When are politicians...
