...Memorial Church would follow the lead of peer universities. Yale’s Battell Chapel recently lost its affiliation with the United Church of Christ and reaffirmed its ecumenical role. University Chapel at Princeton similarly offers ecumenical services on Sundays. Dartmouth’s Rollins Chapel is an explicitly interfaith space, with a Muslim prayer room off the main transept. Earl Hall at Columbia is more a center for community service and houses the Office of the University Chaplain, which is also explicitly interfaith. Any one of these alternatives would be better than Harvard’s status...

Nearly everything faith-related that I have done at Harvard has been followed by free food, from going to services at Harvard’s Episcopal Chaplaincy to attending a day of interfaith discussion and dialogue hosted by the university chaplains in the fall. And that was exciting! After a fast-breaking for Ramadan, there were performances by Jewish and Christian musical groups, a humanist singing a song about the evolution of empathy, and a keynote address by Sally Quinn. ...needs to show good faith toward the global community and in the future should be far more thorough in picking his appointments within the church. Though his involvement in the Hitler Youth is certainly not an indicator of his current beliefs, the Pope must nonetheless be conscious of interfaith relations and how his past history colors the global perception of his actions. Though creating a united Roman Catholic Church is a worthy objective, it is hardly worth it if all other religions are alienated in the process...
