John Cloud's view of the New SAT provided a compelling account of the social politics behind high-stakes standardized testing. He also exposes an important tension within the New SAT's guiding principles. The College Board is right to be concerned about performance gaps among different demographic groups, but making the SAT more of an achievement test than a so-called aptitude test may exacerbate the problem. Changing the test to produce socially desirable results can distract attention from a greater problem: unequal access to excellence in education. Until the nation's schools begin providing equal education...

...Where Chiang had once represented the authoritarian strongman presiding over a booming capitalist economy offering low-cost manufactured goods to the U.S. market and raising the living standards of its people, today that role has been usurped on the mainland by the Chinese Communist Party. The tension across the Taiwan Strait remains high, but its terms have changed. Today, Beijing's claim to Taiwan is an expression of the nationalist mantle adopted by a Communist Party serving as the authoritarian steward of a booming capitalist economy, while the Taiwanese electorate - having attained a democratic voice over their own destiny...

...Heavy-Luggage Hand Stretches, Red-Eye Foot Flexes and Deplaning Pep Walks. Drawings accompany the easy-to-understand text, and many moves use available props like waiting-area chairs, meal trays and barf bags (the last are wrung to release wrist tension). The stretches are effective, yet the book's attitude stays light (a benefit of the Mile High Thigh Tone is that it develops "sexy stewardess legs"). One quibble: we would prefer a spiral-bound version, given that there's not enough room at most airline seats to hold the book open while reading the directions...

...proposed reconciliation of this constitutional tension is to note the extraordinary qualifications of this candidate and to urge the Senate to confirm Mr. Estrada; actually, all the Democrats have to do is to allow the nomination to come to a vote. The Senate should assert its constitutional power against presidential nominations for judicial office, and arguably even with a filibuster, when the nominee does not possess the high qualifications for federal judicial office. Mr. Estrada’s record in the Solicitor General’s Office suggests that he is no ideologue. When high ability and good character...
