SKATING.Why can't the Athletic Association give some skating-races this winter, and so help to fill up the dull season? A course could be easily laid out, on Fresh Pond or some other neighboring water, of say a straight quarter-mile, and races of a mile, half-quarter, hundred yards, etc., could be easily given. If the H. A. A. will do so, the editor of this column will give a $ 10 cup for a race of quarter-mile heats, best two in three. Such a race should furnish good sport, and fast time would doubtless be made...

...Yale Literary Magazine in the number for November publishes its prize essay, "Aspasia: the Study of a Portrait." The judges were Yale professors, and we cannot help thinking how different would have been the fate of the essay had it fallen into the clutches of our Bowdoin Prize Committee. Its substance is excellent, but its style would have been fatal to it here...
