Hurricanes have a neat way of reminding Americans of their privilege. Louisiana State Representative John LaBruzzo experienced a reality check when he visited New Orleans residents seeking relief from Hurricane Gustav late last month. When word got out that a filling station in the Atlanta suburb of Buckhead had received a fresh supply of regular unleaded, the line began forming well before dawn. Thanks to Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which crippled Gulf Coast refineries, drivers in the Southeast are creeping around town with their gas gauges on empty, searching for a pump that isn't dry. ...Baton Rouge Takes a Battering After spending a week without electricity and access to news, I was happy to see an article on Hurricane Gustav [Sept. 15]. Yet after reading it, I was sorry to see that TIME missed the boat. Nearly the entire two pages were about the city of New Orleans. New Orleans got lucky with Gustav. Baton Rouge, the state capital, is facing the worst electrical damage in its recorded history and isn't even mentioned. Ninety percent of the city was without power after Gustav hit. Thousands of homes were lost or suffered significant damage...
