...after a federal judge's ruling last week on several counties' voting procedures, the election could be delayed until March. But Bustamante's strong showing reveals two things: voters are increasingly giving up on Davis, and a rump of California's Democrats is determined to hang on to the governorship. Field-poll figures showed 58% of likely voters support the recall motion against Davis, compared with 51% a month...

...will not be the only candidate who has the resources, powerful backers and name identification to push out Davis. Or even the only one who speaks with an accent: Huffington, running as an Independent and a populist outsider, has hired advisers who helped wrestler Jesse Ventura win the Minnesota governorship in 1998. Businessman Bill Simon, the Republican nominee defeated by Davis last year, has claim to the conservative base that provides the Republicans with what little life they have in California. Ueberroth, though officially a Republican, will sell himself as a serious candidate with crossover appeal in a state where...

...Democrat to watch is Feinstein. "Nothing I know right now interests me in running," she said last week. But that leaves her some wiggle room, should things change. She is more popular in the state than Davis and has long been thought to covet the governorship. (She lost a shot at it in 1990.) She also comes to the race with rare experience. In 1983 when she was mayor of San Francisco, she too faced a recall election. She won handily. --By Terry McCarthy and Karen Tumulty
