...this is not to say that The Corn is Green is flawless. The play occasionally drags on, becoming boring and repetitive, particularly in the last scene of the first act and the last scene of the play. As it stands, The Corn is Green does run long--a little over two and a half hours, and some scenes could have been pared down a little bit to hold the audience's attention better. ...last two pieces brought Galway back onto the stage, his brassy, clear sounds bringing the volume back up again after Marais' Suite. The Bach Sonata in E major was purely a Galway showcase, the other players fading in the background for once as he overwhelmed them with his flawless playing. The Telemann Quartet in D Minor, however, brought the whole group on stage for the finale, and all contributed to the success of the performance of that work. After the Sanctus and Benedictus, the concert closed on the final part of the Mass, the Agnus Dei. Antony Pay's flawless clarinet solos blended well with the alternating vocal sections, and a distinctive period horn sound, in some very well played passages, filled out the instrumental solo sections. The combination of orchestra, chorus, solo vocal and solo instrumental lines in this final piece created a very pleasing sense of unity to end the concert. The only real problem with the program was that with only 60 minutes of music, it was not enough...
