When the University crew crossed the finish line at New London last July, a winner over Yale by six lengths, the victory culminated perhaps the most notable week in the history of Harvard rowing, a week in which Harvard had won six out of six races from Yale, each race in a clean-cut and decisive manner. In 1899 the University crews were all victorious at New London, but at that time there were only three races, those between the university eights and fours and freshman eights, so the out come of this year's races was even more triumphant...
...four. The eight rowed in very short stretches about 30 strokes to the minute, and Coach Wray followed in his single scull, coaching the men on their individual faults. L. Withington at 5 does not seem to get his shoulders on very well at the catch, and Lunt's finish is not yet satisfactory. The whole crew is inclined to tear at the water at the catch instead of dropping the oars in quickly without jerking. In spite of these slight faults, however, the crew continues to show marked improvement with every row. The Freshman eight did no harder work...
...eight which Coach Kennedy regularly turns out. At New London the crew has rowed two fast time trials and continued to improve. The crew this year seems to be different from the Yale crews of other years. The men seem to row shorter, and the long, hard catch and finish are not so pronounced as in former years. The crew is very well together, and a well-balanced and smoothly-moving combination, although a sinking of the boat and slight check between strokes is perceptible...
...June 22, 1909.--As the weather continues to be very hot, the crews had light work again this morning. The University eight went down-stream to the mile mark and back in easy stretches. The boat went very well and spaced out beautifully on a perfectly even keel; the finish was hard and the catch quick and there was plenty of life in the boat. All the crews did about the same work as the University eight, the Freshman crew also rowing very well. R. F. Hoopel 11 returned to the quarters early this morning and a complete change...
...afternoon, Voorhees of the four replacing Faxon as coxswain. This crew went over the two-mile course up-stream, but was not timed. A racing start was tried, the crew going off at 38, and then the stroke was lowered to 30, being raised again to 36 at the finish. The rowing was very satisfactory and the boat spaced as well as it has this year. The University four rowed about eight miles in all, and on the way back to the quarters the crew took it up for about a mile with the Yale university eight, which was paddling...
