...Martin himself says he hopes the end of his battle in the courts will lead to a personal renaissance on the fairway. But as for changing the world, or even the world of golf, Martin doesn't seem to want the extra pressure. He knows the game - and his own game - all too well for that, and he'll settle for just playing well enough to make some of this fooferaw seem worthwhile...

...really matter; a majority ruling from the Supreme Court tends to eliminate the need for philosophical debate. But it is an interesting question: What is the fundamental aspect of golf that makes it a sport? And can Casey Martin truly consider himself a "golfer" if he rides from fairway to fairway rather than trekking alongside his competition? If we answer "no," we need to be willing to carry our argument to its ultimate conclusion: If Martin is not physically capable of walking the course, and we agree he should not be permitted to compete with the aid of a cart...

...right. Most of us don't need him to be a savior or a hero or a role model. We simply want the spectacle: Tiger gliding down the fairway, Tiger hitting rainmaker drives, Tiger pummeling his opponents and then putting his arm around them, Tiger hugging his mom. If he turns and winks back at us every once in a while, that will be good enough...
