Afraid that the Republican governor of the Oklahoma territory would tamper with the new state's constitution, Bill-walked off with the original document in his pocket. To guard Murray and his papers friends formed a brigade of 5,000 citizens, dubbed themselves the Squirrel Rifles. Everyone said the brigade was a joke, but it was a joke with a point. No one fooled with Alfalfa Bill. The state was born pretty much along the lines which Bill had planned...

...Little Flower like a bullfighter's cape, he leaped into the arena, flapped it at the mayor-and then set hurriedly off after that well-scuffed political kigmy, Gambler Frank Costello. He implied heatedly that Costello ruled Tammany and that Tammany ruled O'Dwyer. He did not document the allegation, but for all that, it had a fine, wild ring to it, and it made lovely headlines...

...first glance the recently released University Financial Report might seem a rather comforting document. Not only did Harvard compile a $497,753 surplus in 1948-1949, but it was able to do so while many other colleges and universities were cutting courses and firing teachers in unsuccessful attempts to lick recurring deficits. However, the Report also shows up the big weakness in Harvard's apparently strong financial position--the University's unrestricted reserve is sharply declining, because there are certain sick departments inside the outwardly healthy body...
