His ending will strike some readers as tragic, some as sugary-depending on what the reader makes of it. ...Kousscvitzky Foundation in 1945 and received its first performance under Boris Goldovsky's direction at Tanglewood in 1946. It takes a turn back to pre-Wagnerian opera with recitative and arias. The orchestra is subordinated to action on the state, though, judging by Thursday night's performance, Conductor Emil Cooper must think the opposite. The music is full of the sea--powerful and unsympathetic. It is a fine mood setting for the vicious fishing village, and Grimes' proscription by the other inhabitants is well portrayed.
