The Plays of de Musset are the only theatrical works of French Romanticism which have lasted. They were not written to be played, and this fact partly explains their character and value. Some of the plays are merely amusing trifles, now out of fashion.
The plays of Victor Hugo are good only by reason of their form,- their lyric quality, in "Hernani" and "Ruy Blas,"- their epic character in the "Burgraves," which was a forerunner of "La Legende des Siecles."
We shall examine the essential traits of de Musset's character, then we shall look to the conceptions he had of poetry and of life. We shall see how sorrow made a great poet of him.
Those of us who knew him well learned to appreciate fully his earnest, thoroughly good and noble character. At the news of his death, we all felt that our class had lost one of its most worthy and promising members.
