The essay on Philip Dormer Stanhope, fourth Earl of Chesterfield, though instructive, well written, and displaying in its argument original thought, seems somewhat out of place, in the field which the Advocate has chosen. "Carmen" needs a second reading to be appreciated. The author's conception is delicate; his expression, however, is somewhat obscure, and at times strains after unnatural words. Such compounds as "scorn-enwrapped" will hardly bear close scrutinizing. The remaining poem of this number, "A Dialogue of Head and Heart" is better than the average Advocate verse. Its method is graceful...

...Thought Transference" is a clear statement of the present condition of the work done by the Society for Psychical Research. The author does not attempt to express personal views on the subject, but lays the facts before the reader and leaves him largely to his own conclusions. The time has come when intelligent men can no longer close their eyes to such questions...
