...spent about five days with the medevacs operating out of Kandahar airfield in southern Afghanistan. There I met Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jessie Russell, a female pilot flying Black Hawks to pick up the injured. I love meeting strong, smart women doing unconventional jobs. Last April, when I was in Kandahar on another embed, I bumped into her in the cafeteria, and the encounter sparked my interest in following the medevacs once again. A few months later, I got my shot...

December, Kabul. A cold fog drifted over the airfield. Gates was dressed in a brown bomber jacket, khakis and boots, ready to fly to Kandahar to visit the Stryker brigade that has been devastated by unrelenting Taliban IED attacks. Since their deployment in July, more than 30 soldiers from that brigade have been killed by roadside bombs. Gates had a message for them: "We're in this thing to win." ...Asia. "The Russians are trying to have it both ways with respect to Afghanistan in terms of Manas," Gates said Thursday. "On one hand you're making positive noises about working with us in Afghanistan, and on the other hand you're working against us in terms of that airfield which is clearly important to us." About 15,000 U.S. personnel and 500 tons of cargo flow through Manas each month, primarily to support U.S. efforts in Afghanistan...
