...biggest sellers last year were Seagram's Absolut vodka (3.3 million cases, up 5.2%) and Grand Met's Jose Cuervo tequila (2.5 million cases, up 6%), brands that are heavily marketed. And therein lies a potential problem: Congress is contemplating hearings on the advertising of alcoholic beverages...

...admit certain biases. I've written for Wired a lot in the past three years; in fact, I have an 8,500-word masterpiece in the current issue (the one with the cantaloupe-and-eggplant-colored "Burning Man" cover and the acid-green-paisley Absolut ad on the back). And some time ago, I received, along with many other contributors, 2,000 shares of Wired Ventures stock, recently declared worthless. So what? Says editor Michael Goff: "We're called Out because coming out is the one thing all gays and lesbians have in common." The problem: it may be the only thing they have in common. Out must span the chasm of gender, traditionally even...

...Will Absolut on the rocks be upstaged by Black Death and tonic? Not if the government can help it. The U.S. aims to block imports of Black Death vodka, a beet-based beverage distilled in Belgium and being test-marketed in Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities. Health officials claim that the vodka's marketing theme, which includes coffin-shaped packaging, is designed to encourage young drinkers. The brand's U.S. wholesaler, Cabo Distributing, denies targeting minors. But the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, with exquisite literalness, is blocking the liquor on grounds of misleading advertising, since the brand...
