...guerrillas had warned Mayor-elect Lucio Rios not to take the oath of office in the small town of Nueva Esparta. Frightened, Christian Democrat Rios did not appear for the ceremony, but the insurgents kidnaped him anyway. Since May 1 they have seized 14 mayors and seem determined to abduct many more in contested municipalities where, according to the rebels, there is a "duality of power" between government and guerrillas. The rebels specifically link their campaign to the national guard's alleged capture of two women guerrillas, but the real aim seems to be to destroy local government structures...

When word of the episode first came out of Montana ten months ago, it seemed a bizarre yarn that belonged in the pages of some old Wild West pulps. Two unshaven, rifle-toting renegade mountain men, a father and son, abduct a young woman to take with them into the trackless Spanish Peaks wilderness where they live. Overtaken by searchers, they kill one pursuer, accidentally wound their captive of 18 hours (she has now recovered completely), then flee alone to the high country, only to be tracked down five months later by an unrelenting sheriff...

Piotrowski and three other members of the Polish secret police--two lieutenants and a colonel, all now reduced to privates--are on trial for last October's abduction and murder of Father Jerzy Popieluszko, a priest who was an unyielding supporter of the banned Solidarity trade-union movement. As Piotrowski took the witness stand last week in Room 40 of the courthouse in the city of Torun, many expected the ex-captain to confirm the prosecution's original claim that the slaying was carried out with the knowledge and support of high-ranking members of the Internal Affairs Ministry, which...

...northwest of Warsaw. The strict security precautions seemed grimly ironic, considering the fact that the four men who were brought to trial in handcuffs last week were, like the policemen outside, employees of the Ministry of the Interior. The four, all secret policemen, are charged in the plot to abduct and murder Father Jerzy Popieluszko, 37, a Roman Catholic priest who was an outspoken supporter of the banned Solidarity trade union. His bound and beaten body was discovered last October in a reservoir 85 miles north of Warsaw...

...that they really disappeared. Even the powerful Argentine generals, with so many instruments of annihilation at their fingertips, could not actually make people disappear. They did what they could: abduct, torture, shoot, behead and bury their enemies in mass and secret graves. What they hoped most recently, since ending their "dirty war" of antiterrorism. was that the issue of the desaparecidos would itself disappear. If the newly elected President of Argentina, Raul Alfonsin, had any sense of custom or propriety, that is precisely what would have happened. But Alfonsin seemed unaware that one does not put the military on trial...
